Annotation of Papers

Authors of accepted papers are asked to markup the title-pages and abstracts of their submissions for the Semantic Web. These annotations will be used as input to allow easy processing and searching. Please follow the next five steps to annotate your paper.

1. Create Document

Initially the abstract has to exist in HTML, which can be created in an arbitrary HTML-editor. This file doesn't have to include any fancy layout, the text of the abstract and some additional information like title and creation date are sufficient. Please note that the described tool, the OntoMat, uses the integrated Java-Browser and might not show all features other standard browsers do. Problems can also arrise from tables in your HTML-file.

2. Choose Annotation Tool

You may use an annotation tool of your choice. You can find a list of possible annotation tools here. OntoMat is one possible choice for annotation which you may use. It can be downloaded here. If you wish to have more general information on it please have a look at the "Semantic Web - Annotation and Authoring" webpage. Detailed instructions for download and installation, and explanations of its use are presented on this page. Please note that it requires JDK 1.4.

3. Choose Ontology for Annotation

You may use an ontology of your choice for the annotation. The ISWC ontology in DAML+OIL is one possible ontology, which has been predefined for the process of annotation. The OntoMat tool allows you to open the ontology directly from the Web.

If you would like to use a different ontology, please provide some further information about it and we will list it here.

4. Annotate Document

Annotate your abstract using your annotation tool according to your ontology.

We will describe here how the annotation can be done using OntoMat:

The following documents are examples of annotated title-pages and abstracts for the ISWC:
Towards Semantic Web Mining, OntoEdit.

5. Upload your Document

To upload your annotated document please place it onto a web-accessible server. Please send us the URL of your document via email. If you don't have access to a server, you may also send us the annotated abstract via email and we will place it onto the server.

Thank you for your cooperation and help on making the Semantic Web real.
