Annotation of Papers

Authors of accepted papers are required to markup the title-pages and abstracts of their submissions for the Semantic Web. These annotations will be used as input to allow easy processing and searching. Please follow the next five steps to annotate your paper.

1. Document Creation

Initially the abstract has to exist in HTML, which can be created in an arbitrary HTML-editor. This file doesn't have to include any expensive layout, the text of the abstract and some additional information like title and creation date are sufficient. Please note that the described tool, the OntoMat, uses the integrated Java-Browser and might not show all features other standard browsers do. Problems can also arrise from tables in your HTML-file.

2. Annotation Tool: OntoMat

The OntoMat is an adequate tool for annotation which you may use. It can be downloaded here. If you wish to have more general information on it please have a look at the "Semantic Web - Annotation and Authoring" webpage. Detailed instructions for download and installation, and explanations of its use are presented on this page. Please note that it requires JDK 1.4.

Of course, you can use any other tool for annotation, if you prefer to.

3. Ontology for Annotation

An ontology covering the most important aspects of publication and computer science has been predefined for the procedure of annotation. Again, please download this file, it has been saved in the DAML+OIL-format. With the OntoMat you can open the ontology directly from the Web.

If you would like to use another ontology or language, please provide some further information about them on your site.

4. Annotation Procedure

Annotation is very comfortable:

The following documents are examples of annotated title-pages and abstracts for the ISWC:
Towards Semantic Web Mining, OntoEdit.

You are free to use other tools for annotation but please save in the DAML+OIL-format.

5. Upload of Document

To upload your annotated document please place it onto an web-accessible server. Please send us the URL of your document via email. If you don't have access to a server, you may also send us the annotated abstract via email and we will place it onto the server.

Thank you for your cooperation and help on making the Semantic Web real.
